Education

The aim is to systematically integrate green chemistry into the three sectors of education (primary, secondary and tertiary). Projects in the field of education range from early contact promoting the idea of sustainable chemistry in primary schools and school pilot projects with a focus on green chemistry through to the establishment of specific teaching specialisations including standalone green chemistry study programmes in Austrian universities. Continuing professional development programmes for companies are also listed here.

Green chemistry in the Austrian education sector

The term ‘green chemistry’ is often heard these days. It encompasses far-reaching aspirations to find and implement methods and processes that will help maintain our planet as a home on which it is worth living.

There is already a large amount of educational content in school and university sectors that is trying to address this set of issues. For the future, however, it is important to look more deeply at aspects of green chemistry and make as many people as possible aware of its importance.

Here, we look at the contribution in the primary and secondary education sector and in continuing professional development and training for teaching staff (tertiary level). The Association of Chemistry Teachers in Austria and subject-specific educational institutions (e.g. AECC Chemistry at the University of Vienna) will continue to work on the planning and dissemination of suitable materials for teaching at all school levels and make them available via the channels below. Further information can also be found on the website of the Austrian Society for Teaching Methodology (ÖGFD).
